Hoof Wraps Q & A Q. What size does it fit? A. The pad measures 5 ¾” in diameter. It is designed for sizes 00, 0, 1 & 2 or hooves that are roughly 4.5” to 5.5” across. Although this is the ideal size range, the bandage can also be effective on a slightly smaller size of 000 or a slightly larger size of 3. If the hoof exceeds 5 ¾”, the standard pad will not fit properly (see pads info below). [top of page] Q. How long will it last? A. . Hoof Wraps is intended for short term use around the barn. The average reported life of the bandage is 7-10 days when a horse is on partial turn out. Hoof Wraps is a multi-use disposable bandage so it’s not intended to wear like a boot. Results will vary depending on the horse and conditions of use. A small number of users have reported a low of 3-5 days of wear while the majority of users report 10-14 days of service. Please note: It is very important that the Hoof Wrap be used with a pad. We have included a general EVA foam pad; however, depending on conditions, you may need or want to use an alternative pad such as Thin Line or Plastic Farrier pads. From the editors of Horse Tack Review: This wrap was removed and applied daily, over the course of just over two weeks at her farm, and used in typical Canadian winter conditions: ice, deep snow, extreme cold, sleet and sometimes even mud, along with common sights in a barn or stabling area: manure and urine, hay, other curious horses... All in all, we're both impressed with the wrap. For something that has an expected lifespan of 4-6 days, the fact that this wrap has held up for a month of constant and tough use is excellent. I was skeptical of this product at first, and even quick to criticize, but it has won me over. I highly recommend that this be a staple in any horse first aid kit. It is light enough to carry in a saddle bag (it weights next to nothing), fits a wide variety of hooves and the price is reasonable for how well this wrap performed. [top of page] Q. What is the best way to apply Hoof Wraps? A. Become familiar with the product instructions and operation before you get under a horse. The pad and hoof need to be centered on the top side of the bandage for the best fit. Hoof Wraps comes with two sets of small adhesive backed hook & loop material that can be used to secure the pad of your choice to the center of the bandage (new feature post July-08) Horses will often allow you to lay the bandage and pad flat on the ground and place the hoof directly onto the pad to begin wrapping the bandage. Secure the pad to the hoof with flex wrap prior to applying the bandage Secure tabs 1 & 2 ahead of time and use as a guide to center the hoof and continue wrapping the other tabs All of the pads can be trimmed down a bit but generally this is not necessary, even on smaller hooves. The pad actually helps enable the bandage to fit properly. If you prefer to trim the pads, just be careful not to take too much. [top of page] Q. What are the different pads used for? A. EVA foam pad comes standard with the bandage and replacements pads are sold as an accessory. This is a general use pad that you may want to swap out from time to time if treating abscess, etc. This pad offers good general protection and benefit but it will lose its ability to cushion fairly quickly. The pad is ½” thick and 5 ¾” in diameter. Please note this is an important part of the longevity of the Hoof Wrap Bandage. Note: EVA or Ethylene vinyl acetate is commonly used as padding in equipment for various sports such as football, hockey, ski boots, etc. Thin Line pads are roughly ¼” thick and 6” wide by 6.5” long. They’re made from the same material as Thin Line saddle pads and their structure allow them to move shock, heat, and weight laterally along the pad - much like the ripple effect of throwing a stone into the water. The no-slip pads are infused with active USDA approved anti-fungal and anti-microbial agents. Plastic Farrier pads are roughly 1/8” thick of hard plastic also roughly 6” wide by 6.5” long. They bend a little but do more to offer protection from hard ground surfaces than they do to offer cushion for a sore hoof. The Plastic pads and Thin Line pads can be used together. [top of page]
