Known worldwide for its extremely pure quality of Diatomaceous Earth (DE), Perma-Guard DE is an eco-friendly naturally organic material from the purest fresh water source. DE is an abbreviation of the words "Diatomaceous Earth," which is a fossilized deposit of microscopic shells created by one celled plants called Diatoms. These plants inhabit all the waters of the earth, and serve as the basic food for aquatic life, just as grass is the basic food for land animals. Some of these deposits, shifted to dry land, are extremely important to humans. Not all deposits of diatomaceous earth or the diatoms present in those deposits are the same.  The shape of the diatom must be tubular with holes on the walls. It is important to have a consistent shape diatom without any unwanted sediment and it must be fresh water because the diatoms form a harder shell and is less fragile than those in salt water.  Salt-water deposits contain a mix of diatom species. These deposits shapes and sediments are inconsistent, making them unusable for our products. Of the 600 deposits in the US only four are considered "food grade" by FDA standards. Other food grade deposits may contain higher amounts of sediment and clay that make them less effective. After analyzing many other "Food Grade" deposits we are satisfied that Perma-Guard Fossil Shell Flour is the purest form of diatomaceous earth.

 Fossil Shell Flour is used as a feed additive for all mammals and add  trace minerals to the system. In the intestinal tract, there is pressure and it is squeezed through.

Important! Do not confuse our Perma Guard products with the Diatomaceous Earth (DE) that is used in swimming pool filters! This type can harm you and your animals because of the different processing.The filtration DE used for pools or other water filtration is a larger mill and is crystalline silica which does cause lung and gut problems or death. It has been heated and the silica becomes a solid. Food Grade DE used as a feed additive is amorphous silica that is an important trace mineral and is safe. (also see safety precautions/trace elements)

Suggested feeding instructions  Adjustments may be made based on your own experience and the weight of the animal.

Our DE is GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe by the FDA), so there is no harm of overdose. A basic rule of thumb is 2% of the dry weight of the food but here are some "dosage" guidelines:

Humans 1 heaping teaspoon stirred in cup of water, mixed in food or in anything you like.
Children  1/2 to 1 level teaspoon per day.
 

Kittens 1/2 teaspoon
Cats 1/2 to 1 teaspoon
 

Puppies 1/2 to 1 teaspoon

Dogs under 50 lbs. 2 teaspoons
Dogs over 50 lbs. 1 tablespoon
Dogs over 100 lbs. 2 tablespoons
 

Cattle  2% by weight of dry ration
Calves 4 grams in morning
Dairy Cows 2% by weight of dry ration (4 oz. )
 

Chickens 5% in feed, also add to dusting boxes
 

Goats 1% to 2% in grain
 

Hogs 2% of weight in feed ration
 

Horses 1/2 - 1 cup in daily ration
 

Sheep 1% to 2% in ground grain

For effective use, the DE must be fed long enough to catch all the newly hatching eggs or cycling through the lungs and back to the stomach. A minimum of 60 days is suggested at 2% of dry weight of the grain ration. It doesn't have to be exact. More will not be harmful, but less may not give you the results expected.

For large animals, DE may also be offered "free choice" as long as dispenser is protected from wind.

Use on beddings, rub into fur and mix in with salt and or minerals for livestock

Diatomaceous Earth will not harm warm-blooded animals or earthworms
Earthworm farmers use it to treat their worm beds for parasites, fungus gnat larva etc. Earth worms are structurally different from insects in that they can actually digest particles of DE. The particles are then eliminated in their castings.
