MY FAVORITE DONKEY
Please don't tell the others
But there's a secret I'd like to share.
Shadow you are the very best donkey
For the rest just don't compare.
I know you're not supposed to have favorites
But Shadow you are mine.
I always smile when I hear you bray
It happens everytime.
You put your whole body in it.
You sound just like a train.
And just when I think you're done braying
You start all over again.
Although you've only been here a year,
I know I could never replace you.
For it wouldn't be only me that missed you,
Mickey would miss you too.
Please don't tell the others
But there's a secret I'd like to share.
Mickey you are the very best donkey
For the rest just don't compare.
I sure didn't need another donkey
When I saw the ad that day.
But I thought, "Oh, what the heck"
And went and saw you anyway.
When I walked up to you, you raised your head.
At my heart strings you did tug.
You placed you head on my shoulder
And gave me a donkey hug.
So Mickey, you've found a home for life.
And I promise you'll always stay.
If all you do is give me hugs.
Each and every day.
Please don't tell the others
But there's a secret I'd like to share.
Jassper you are the very best donkey
For the rest just don't compare.
You were tiny when I first saw you.
Just an hour old.
I never dreamed that you'd grow up
To be so very bold.
Dog, cat, chicken none are safe
Whenever you're around.
Away you go, chasing them,
And try to stomp them in the ground.
Jassper you are so cute
With your shaggy coat all year
You've brought me many hours of joy
And I hold you oh, so dear.
Please don't tell the others
But there's a secret I'd like to share.
Ranger you are the very best donkey.
For the rest just don't compare.
I'll never forget the day I found you,
Ranger you started it all.
That day that I first looked in your eyes
Never dreaming how deep I'd fall.
You are my friend and my partner.
You'll always be special to me.
Where ever you go, you bring sunshine.
You're all I'd want a donkey to be.
I guess that I just can't decide.
They're all special in some way.
But I must go, for down the road,
I hear ANOTHER donkey bray!

Peace at Last
They brought me here late last night
To this place so dark and cold
I heard them say my days are over
Now I feel so all alone.
My eyes adjust to this dim light
But I see no one I know
I wonder why they left me here
So far away from home.
I always did my best for them
I just don't understand
Why I never heard kind words of thanks
Or the gentleness of a hand.
But wait, I hear a crying sound
In the pen right next to me
And when I peered between the boards
A mother cow I did see.
I asked her, "Why are you crying?
And why do you look so sad?
Could it be your master has left you too?
Did you do something bad?"
She looked at me with big brown eyes
And said, "No, I've been good.
My master says now I'm too old
To give milk like I should.
For each year I'd have a baby
Oh, a beautiful baby, you'd agree
And each year they'd take my baby away
The babies that meant the world to me.
But now I'm old and tired
And I must go away
To where I'll be a calf again
To run and jump and play.
And so I'll pray for you my friend
I hope your end comes fast.
Just close your eyes and think of me
And you'll find peace at last."
And then she turned back to the corner
And cried her silent tears.
And I was left alone again
With nothing but my fears.
Soon a man came for me
With a sneer upon his face.
He looked at me and then he said,
"Gawd, are you a disgrace!"
"With ears too long and a ratty tail
And a cross upon your back.
The things that I admire in a horse
Are all the things you lack."
Well, I had heard those words before
And they always made me sad.
I'd often felt the sting of a whip
Since the time I was a lad.
He led me to a big bright room
There were people everywhere.
And when they saw me standing there
They just looked at me and stared.
Then they started laughing at me
And making fun of my long ears.
They were laughing so hard at me
That they didn't see my tears.
I let out a bray louder than them
But it only made them laugh more.
And that's when a man hollered "SOLD"
And I was led out another door.
Standing all alone again
With my head hanging down so low
I heard the door to my pen open up
And I knew it was time to go.
So with my eyes closed tightly
Against what was to come
I felt a kind hand upon my face
But where could this be coming from?
I opened my eyes and saw
A little girl smiling bright.
She wrapped her arms around my neck
And held me oh so tight!
My days are full of sunshine now
With my little friend.
We go for walks in the hills
And my heart is on the mend.
She thinks my ears are beautiful
And tells me so each day.
I think she knows just how I feel
When I greet her with a bray!

GRANDPA'S MULE
My grandpa used to have a mule
The finest mule around.
Each Sunday he'd hitch the buggy up
And drive us all to town.
The townfolk used to stand and watch
As we would trot on by
That ol mule sure could pick up his feet
And it felt like the buggy could fly.
Well, grandpa had that mule decked out
With harness that would shine
From the blinders on his bridle
To the britchin on his behind.
Grandpa sure loved that mule
That's something everyone knew
He'd tell you about his special friend
And each year his admiration grew.
Like the time that they was hunting
And a storm had come up fast
The trail was blocked by a huge fallen tree
There was just no way to pass.
Grandpa told that ol mule "JUMP!"
It must have been something to see
For to hear the way that Grandpa told it
That mule jumped clean over that tree.
Another time cows were calving
There was baby cows everywhere.
You could hear the coyotes howling
They were gettin pretty near.
One of the coyotes spotted a calf
And came slinking through the fence
That ol mule took off after him
And we ain't seen that coyote since.
So if you see my grandpa
And a tear rolls down his cheek
It's that old friend he's thinking about
Cuz that ol mule died last week.
Please don't tell my grandpa
That his mule was nothing rare.
But to him that mule was special.
No other could compare.
I've got a surprise for Grandpa
And he's standing right over there.
Cuz I just bought a jack today
To breed to his good mare.

I am Donkey
If I was born with longer legs
Or shorter ears, I know,
I could have been a "Racing Horse"
Or maybe "Best in Show"
But I was born with big long ears
My legs, though short, are sound
And although they're not quite as long
They keep me off the ground!
My back is stout, my voice is loud
And I learn really quick
If you just bring me carrots
And leave at home the stick
So overall I do alright
I don't care what you say....
I like me just the way I am
I'm Donkey, Hear me Bray!!!!!

You Can't Buy Love?
You can't buy loyalty so they say;
I bought it though, the other day.
You can't buy friendship, tried and true;
Well, just the same, I bought that, too.
I made my bid, and on the spot,
Bought love and faith, and a whole job lot
of happiness. So, all in all,
The purchase price was pretty small.
I bought a simple, trusting heart
That gave devotion from the start.
If you think these things are not for sale,
Buy a brown-eyed donk with a rope like tail!

The Donkey
When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.
With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil's walking parody
On all four-footed things.
The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.
Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.

Just A
Horse
From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s
just a horse,” or, “that’s a lot of money for just a horse.”
They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time
spent, or the costs involved for “just a horse.”
Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a
horse,”
Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a
horse,” but I did not once feel slighted.
Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by
“just a horse,” and in those days of darkness, the
gentle touch of “just a horse,” gave me comfort and
reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it’s “just a horse,” then you will
probably understand phases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,”
or “just a promise.”
“Just a horse” brings into my life the very essence of
friendship, trust and pure unbridled joy.
“Just a horse” brings out the compassion and patience
that makes me a better person.
Because of “just a horse” I will rise early, take long
walks and look longingly to the future.
So for me, and the folks like me, it’s not “just a
horse” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the
future, the fond memories of the past and the pure joy
of the moment.
“Just a horse” brings out what’s good in me and diverts
my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the
day.
I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not
“just a horse” but the thing that gives me humanity and
keeps me from being “just a woman/man.”
So the next time you hear the phrases “just a horse”
just smile, because they “just don’t understand!”
